- 04 KINTAMANI & BARONG DANCE TOUR
(8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.)
The
climax of this tour is the view of Mount Batur and its
lake in the huge volcanic crater. Penelokan, "the
place for looking", offers relaxation and refreshment
at a restaurant where one can do just this. Enroute
lie a series of artists' villages:
Batubulan : village of stone carvers, where the Barong
dance is held daily. This dramatic portrayal of the
eternal fight between good and evil is taken from the
Mahabharata epic. It climaxes in a mass trance, as the
dancers stab themselves with kris daggers, protected
from the sharp steel by their spiritual beliefs.
Celuk : for gold and silversmithry.
Mas : known for its fine wood-carvings and accomplished
artists.
Goa Gajah : the elephant cave, a former monastery where
meditation caves dating back to the 8th Century have
been rediscovered.
Tampak Siring : holy springs within a stately temple.
Ubud : the famous community of artists with its museum
of paintings dating back to the art renaissance of the
1930's.
