that have been covered with moss and lichen over the
                          centuries.

                          TP - 10 BARONG & KRIS DANCE
                           (9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.)

                           The
Barong play describes the eternal struggle between good
and evil. The Barong represents good and the evil witch
Rangda impersonates evil. The story is taken from the
Mahabharata epic, and consists of five acts. The winner
of the fight is undecided. In the last scene of the
play the kris dancers fall into a deep trance and try
to kill Rangda. Influenced by her magic spells that
turn their weapons, the dancers begin to stab themselves
with the sharp blades. At the end of the performance
the white robed priest sprinkles the dancers with holy
water to bring them out of their crazed state and back
                          to consciousness.

                          - 11 KECAK, FIRE DANCE & TRANCE DANCE
                          (7.00 to 8.30 p.m.)

                         The
first of the three performances is the Kecak Dance.
Up to one hundred men, bare from the waist up, form
a layered circle, moving and chanting in simultaneous
orchestration. This human melee forms the backdrop for
the enaction of an episode from the Ramayana. Dancers
swaying and bending their bodies, raising and stretching
trembling hands, create a dramatic anenome-like effect.
The second dance involves two young women who dance
in trance, and finally comes the fire dance, performed
by a male dancer who tramples on burning coals, prancing
with a hobby-horse made of palm leaves.

                          - 12 LEGONG DANCE (7.00
                          to 8.30 p.m.)

                         Perhaps
the most exquisite Balinese dance is the classical Legong
Kraton, traditionally performed as entertainment for
the Royal Courts and their honoured guests by young
girls wrapped in hand-painted gold brocades with glittering
                          head-dresses.
