                | Karang leads Kuta Karnival
                    to bring people closer
                  Cultural,
sporting, fun-game, and food bazaar activities wrapped in
Kuta Karnival (KK), which for this year is entering its third
time, will last from June 25th through July 3 rd in “global
                    village” Kuta.
The holding of the annual event should thank to the role played
by Made Supatra Karang, the head of Kuta Small Businesses
Association (KSBA). This man born 50 years ago in Kuta said
that the conduct of the festivity was to bring local residents
closer. The meant local people, to this regard, encompass
natives, other people from other Indonesian regions, and expatriates.
“A city can be said plural if those residing came from
various Indonesian regions. In the case of Kuta, it can be
called “super” plural as people of around the
world dwell in the city,” this owner of Mimpi Cottage
                    commented.

                    Unfortunately,
all this time those mixed city dwellers tend to be individualistic,
they tend to act for their social groups’ interests.
Like an ad said “You are you” added with the words
“Me is me, you group is your”.
The tragedy of Bali bombing occurring three years back, could
be said as the starting point for Kuta dwellers for introspection.
Kuta’s residents were hard hit by the tragedy, their
businesses collapsed. The experience then becomes a lesson
for them to be more integrated and eliminate egos.

“Finally we realize that togetherness is a must to make
a strong community in facing various challenges. Therefore,
then we agree to make a collective activity under the name
Kuta Karnival,” this father of three kids recalled his
                    memory.
Despite the fact he is unpaid for his job coordinating Kuta’s
residents—even he has to take some money from his own
                    wallet—he feels really content spiritually.
His house and at the same time his source of income—Mimpi
Cottage—, which sits on Poppies lane I of Kuta, is used
by him as the secretariat of KK. “I just enjoy it. We
all work, sacrifice for everyone’s interest. I guess
this is what we call with ngayah (doing good deeds without
                    any motives) in Bali.” *pry/ant
